I am a huge fan of the challenge / instant replay capabilities for tennis. Just like instant replay in football, I want to see the right call made even if it takes a little extra time. In football, refs are obviously altering their on the field calls because replay is now available for teams to review close plays. For example, in a play when there is a fumble by a receiver that was not obvious right away, the refs will call it a fumble in order for the play to complete. If they call the play dead, then often times the play may have been called dead prematurely. This way, a team can challenge the call to make sure it is correct. I am okay with this as the play is usually reviewed and the correct call is made.
At this year’s Australian Open, only the 2 main courts have replay capabilities. Firstly, each player is given 3 challenges per set. In all the matches I have seen, it seems as if more than 50 percent of the time, a call is reversed. That is a ridiculously high number of reversed calls. These line judges must be blind idiots. All the years prior to replay, there must be at least 10-15 incorrect calls made in every match.
To make matters worse, they do not have Cyclops which is used to make the service calls those 100+ mph serves. In the women’s semifinal between Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic, on several occasions, a serve was incorrectly called by the line judge only to be reversed. That is ridiculous that the players have to waste a challenge on a serve that could be resolved by having Cyclops on the courts. If these blind line judges are missing calls on regular groundstrokes, there is no way in hell they are capable of correctly calling a 100 mph serve in or out. I just cannot stand for bad calls in any sport. This is ridiculous.
