Despite the efforts of fans and even the governor of Hawaii, June Jones has decided to leave Hawaii to become the head coach at SMU. The move makes sense despite leading Hawaii to a 12-0 record before getting their butts kicked against Georgia in the BCS Sugar Bowl.
Firstly, Hawaii were lucky to be selected into the BCS this season since they played a weak schedule despite winning the WAC Conference. With their unimpressive showing in the Sugar Bowl, I doubt voters will give them another chance at making at that far for a long time.
Secondly, the facilities at Hawaii need a significant upgrade and the recruiting budget is minimal. At SMU, Jones will receives more money, recently renovated facilities, better recruiting, and a another chance at revitalizing an SMU program that is basically at rock bottom. Jones has accomplished all that any coach could have accomplished at Hawaii and it was time for a new challenge at SMU.
Other than the beautiful beaches of Hawaii, there was really nothing keeping Jones at Hawaii. I am sure Jones was just imagining what his offense will be able to do with great players he will be able to recruit that he otherwise could not have at Hawaii.
